Welcome to the new school year.
Below is information about the Head Start Health and Safety performance standards for all classrooms. Most of this will be review for all the classrooms, but I have attached links to updated posters and procedures, and attached some of the procedures as well. Everyone who works in the classroom should have this information and should be familiar with all this information. I will also make sure that the Pre K office has copies of all these postings and procedures, in case people are having trouble downloading something. There are also some left over color posters from past years which will be in the Pre K office.
Head Start Health and Safety performance standards require the following postings in each classroom:
1) Choking
2) CPR
3) Dental Emergency
4) Emergency Evacuation routes
5) Emergency Response systems
They also require Handwashing procedures and Diapering procedures and Emergency numbers posted(911 and Poison Control)
The classrooms began to be required to do a daily Health and Safety check list a couple years ago. The link to this form is attached for you to put in a binder.
Here are the links for updated posters which should be able to be down loaded and posted, if you don’t have them:
Dental Emergency: (this is a new poster for the classrooms. You can write: Contact School Nurse for assistance in the bottom left corner, instead of a dentist name)

Emergency evacuation routes and procedures should be in each classroom as required by the school building. Emergency Exits must be clearly marked. Talk to your building staff if you do not have these things for your room.
Emergency stickers for the phones: 911 and poison control. These stickers will be available at the Pre K office.
Attached are the diapering procedure and hand washing procedure.
Plug Covers, window cord ties, gloves, diaper changing paper are all available at the Pre K office.
And as always, make sure items which are choking hazards are not accessible to the children.
Hazardous materials should be stored out of reach or in a locked cabinet.
First Aid Kits must be in each classroom and clearly labeled- these are available from the school nurse in your building
Remember to only use school approved cleaning supplies. The school should have MSDS forms available for all supplies used, in case someone asks for them.
Tooth Brushing and Dental Hygiene. Here is the Head Start link for policies and procedures:
http://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc/tta-system/health/oral-health/policies-procedures/OralHealthPolic.htm
Also the TCA Head Start Toothbrushing procedure is attached as well.
Toothbrushes are available in the Pre K office. The schedule for classroom dental screenings has been sent to the Pre K offices and should be on the Pre K Calendar.
I hope you find this information helpful. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and wonderful start to the school year!
